With so many people jumping on the healthy food craze train it can be disconcerting for the chaps and ladies who are up to having a good old fashioned English breakfast. Let’s face it. Most of us know eating a plate of fried foods each morning is not in our best interests, but do we really have to give them up altogether?Well, possibly. There is certainly a very strong argument that the whole world would be much, much better off going vegan. But if you must insist on sticking to your carnivorous ways, then a night at the local pub might just satisfy. Here, the fine fellows from one of the great Holborn Pubs, The Old Crown, tip their hats to a plate of English favourites.

-
- Black Pudding: Some less in the know diners might miss a chance to try a truly flavourful breakfast staple of British mornings, black pudding. The idea of this popular breakfast “sausage” might not appeal to many people. However anyone who has ever sat down to a true English breakfast knows that this unsuspecting mixture of oats, spices and dare we say it, pig’s blood creates a delicious sausage with excellent texture and hearty flavour that takes a basic breakfast to a whole new level.
- Rasher of Bacon: Bacon comes in many different genres from smoky to salty and thick slab to Applewood smoked. No matter how you slice it, bacon is a must on the plate of the hungryman’s breakfast plate. Bacon has a reputation for being too salty or too fatty but when cooked just right it adds that perfect balance to the hearty English breakfast.

-
- Sausage:Grilled, golden and full of flavour, the humble sausage completes the meat portion of the English breakfast.
- Eggs: Of course eggs are the main event on the breakfast plate and traditional fried eggs are the preferred preparation for the English breakfast. Lovely, golden yolks begging for a dip of warm toast adds a splash of colour on an otherwise boring plate.
- A Touch of Veg: Not all English breakfasts include fried mushrooms but the best ones do. Mushrooms add a certain appeal to the basic breakfast and some might argue it is grilled tomatoes that are the must. However a breakfast with mushrooms just seems to complete the meal. However for the perfect breakfast you should include both mushrooms and tomatoes. Grilled or fried tomatoes are rich and lush with a deep flavour that is perfect next to the salty bacon.

- Beans: Baked beans add a touch of sweet to the traditional breakfast and are another perfect side for dipping that warm toast.
- Warm Toast: Toast is probably one of the most comforting foods. Served with butter, toast is a must for dipping into those perfectly cooked yolks, or to enjoy with your favourite jam or marmalade.
- Hash Browns: Traditional English chip and egg include fried potatoes. However some chefs prefer to add some hash browns for a crisp, golden addition to the breakfast plate.
No self-respecting Englishman can turn down the perfect English breakfast. So eat up lads and take a jog round the block to work off that extra fat.
