Coffee s there for you – it helps you get up in the morning and stay focused during tough moments and demanding tasks. Billions of people in the world cannot imagine their lives without coffee, and it is easy to understand why. While over 30 billion K-cups was sold in less than a year, it came as a surprise to hear John Sylvan, K-cup creator, saying he regrets creating the whole disposable coffee pod system. He states that he does not have disposable coffee pods in his house and cannot understand people who do. It has a huge negative impact on the environment and are, according to Sylvan, expensive. Nevertheless, people from all over the world use them every day.
The problem with recycling
While there are many materials which are recyclable, coffee pods somehow have not made it on the list. They are very small, and actually contain three elements: the aluminum lid (miniature aluminum lid to be honest), plastic cup, and the roast – the hot, steamy roast nobody feels like touching after the coffee is made. We admit it, it is not very convenient separating these three things first thing in the morning, while you can barely keep your eyes open, but it is becoming difficult to ignore the rising piles of used pods in the trash.
Go green with your coffee pods

Greener future
It is not easy finding an alternative (or should we say ‘greener’) ways to pack coffee in disposable pods, but all the great companies have recognized the negative impact on the environment and are doing their best to change something. Several big companies such as Nestle or Keurig are making plans to have all their coffee pods recyclable by 2020. Until they come up with good solution, you can do your best by using eco-friendly nespresso capsules and other green and biodegradable products.
It may not seem like much to you, but going green is important and relevant. By changing your habits ever-so-slightly, you will make a big difference in the long run. The numbers of non-recyclable and non-biodegradable coffee cups will be reduced, the world will be a bit greener and cleaner place and it is going to be partly because of your choices.
